Residence of Chen

A Modern and Spacious Home Designed for Family Interaction

In most dual earner families in Taiwan, parents often overlook the importance of companionship in their children's growth. The Residence of Chen, designed by Tsai Chun Wei, aims to address this issue by creating a house that serves as a container for happiness and encourages parents to fully interact with their children. With its simple and clean style, this design emphasizes the essence of life and provides a spacious and movable field for residents.

The Residence of Chen stands out with its unique approach to space. The designer removes the partitions in the original layout, opening up the entire area and creating a sense of spaciousness. A storage cabinet made of veneer is cleverly integrated into the wall behind the sofa, maximizing functionality without sacrificing aesthetics. The TV is mounted on the wall, allowing the homeowners to adjust the angle according to their needs. By arranging the sofa and dining table on opposite sides, a space is created in the middle, enabling the parents to keep an eye on their child's movements.

The realization of this design is a testament to the designer's attention to detail. The ceiling's sense of line is utilized to divide the space and create visual layers. The selection of dark introverted colors, such as cement gray, combined with the warmth of solid wood, injects a natural and inviting atmosphere. Delicate textured wallpaper extends across the walls, adding a unique touch to the overall design. Metal and translucent glass style lighting fixtures are tastefully incorporated, providing original highlights and a touch of fashion. The floor is covered with pandomo material, which not only retains a manual touch but also adds a human touch to the space. Low furniture is carefully chosen to allow ample natural light and urban scenery to fill the room.

The Residence of Chen is designed to facilitate interaction among family members. The living room adopts an open concept, removing the TV wall and standard sofa back wall. The flexible sofa configuration, complemented by colorful pillows, creates a welcoming and embracing atmosphere. The spacious moving lines around the living room provide ample space for the child to run and play. The public area, consisting of the living room, dining room, and kitchen, is optimized to break clear boundaries and integrate seamlessly. The kitchen workbench faces the living room, allowing family members to interact while cooking and keeping an eye on the child's activities in the public area.

The Residence of Chen project started in June 2018 and was completed in December 2018 in Taiwan. Throughout the design process, the main challenge was to strike a balance between simplicity and warmth. The use of cool cement gray as the base color, combined with warm wood grain textures, successfully creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Furniture with rounded corners and lively lines adds a special touch to the overall design.

The Residence of Chen is a testament to the power of thoughtful design in creating a harmonious and interactive living space. With its emphasis on simplicity, functionality, and family interaction, this design truly embodies the essence of modern lifestyle. It is no wonder that the Residence of Chen was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, technical skills, and contribute to improving the quality of life.
